Martin Skrtel starred for Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night as the Turkish side piled the pressure on Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 2-1 win – and Liverpool fans have applauded their former central defender.
Skrtel, 35, is renowned as an icon at Liverpool and one of the club’s best central defenders in the last 20 years after clocking up 320 appearances in all competitions for the Reds. Last summer, he swapped Fenerbahce for Basaksehir.
It saw the 104-time Slovakia international return to Champions League football and he lined-up against Manchester United on Wednesday night. Some woeful defending at the other end gave Basaksehir the lead, through another veteran – Demba Ba.

United left no-one back from a corner and it saw a clearance play in Ba, who finished neatly. It was 2-0 with five minutes of the first 45 to play, as Ba’s dummy allowed Basaksehir skipper Edin Visca lash home a first-time effort.
Anthony Martial netted for Manchester United before the end of the first half, but Solskjaer’s men could not turn the tide. It was an excellent win for Basaksehir and Skrtel, but it leaves Solskjaer’s future at United in enormous doubt.
Liverpool supporters reacted to Skrtel’s performance and win over the Merseyside club’s fierce rivals. Many poked fun at United while others applauded Skrtel for helping heap the pressure on United.
