Ollie Watkins played a crucial part in Brentford overturning their first-leg deficit to reach the Championship play-off final on Wednesday evening against Swansea City – prompting reaction from Liverpool fans, and David Thompson.

Watkins, 24, was converted into a striker last summer by Brentford manager Thomas Frank – having scored just 10 goals last season as a winger. The change in position has worked wonders, with Watkins scored 26 times this term.

The 26th goal of the season came just after the first 10 minutes of the second leg – after Andre Ayew scored the only goal of the game for Swansea in the previous leg. A quick counter saw Watkins go through, and he netted.

That levelled the ties up on aggregate, but it was Brentford who took control. Just four minutes later and Emiliano Marcondes had turned the tie on its head, before Bryan Mbuemo made it three just after the half-time break.

Rhian Brewster did score a late goal for Swansea to set up a nervy end to the match after a mistake from Pontus Jansson. Watkins is now one goal away from 50 for Brentford, since his £1.8million (Sky Sports) move in 2017.

The striker’s performance left a lasting impression on Liverpool supporters and indeed ex-Reds midfielder Thompson – with many fans suggesting he would be ideal for Liverpool in the coming months.
