Signing Demirbay could be disastrous for Oxlade-Chamberlain's Liverpool career
Liverpool have shown a willingness to splash the cash in recent years and that could be set to continue with a swoop for Kerem Demirbay in January.
Turkish-Football claims Jurgen Klopp’s side are considering activating the 25-year-old’s £28m release clause when the window reopens, utilising the link they have with a player who shares an agent with Sadio Mane and Naby Keita.
Demirbay, who worked with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, would provide Liverpool with additional creativity in midfield but his arrival could prove to be disastrous for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s career at Anfield.
Signed from Arsenal last summer, Oxlade-Chamberlain missed just six of Liverpool’s Premier League matches in his inaugural season at the club but has seen his development knocked back once again by another injury issue.
The England international is likely to miss the vast majority of the 2018-19 season and has already seen Liverpool bolster their midfield ranks in his absence with the additions of Keita and Fabinho, providing him with stern competition upon his return.
If Demirbay was to also arrive, then Oxlade-Chamberlain could fall further down the pecking order and it would provide a decisive blow to a talented player who has been plagued by injury issues during his career so far.
