Virgil Van Dijk is the clear first-choice option at Liverpool for one of their centre-back positions and that would be the case for any team in the world.
The Reds also have three decent options though in Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren fighting it out to play alongside him.
All three have shown in the past they can do a solid job at Anfield in the backline and can compliment Van Dijk.
Manager Jurgen Klopp hasn’t had too many selection headaches at the back recently due to injuries, which has meant a formidable combination of Van Dijk and Gomez have blossomed in defence.
But he could soon have a dilemma on his hands, as powerhouse Matip is close to a comeback.
Matip, 28, hasn’t featured since October with a knee problem, but Klopp has confirmed (official website) that he could be involved in preparations for the weekend clash at home to Manchester United.
He looked extremely assured in defence during the early stages of the season and was pivotal in the last campaign too.
There may be a temptation to throw Matip back into the XI given his previous performances in a Liverpool shirt, but there is no way Gomez deserves to be dropped.
Liverpool signed Gomez for just £3.5million (BBC) from Charlton Athletic and he’s turned out to be a masterstroke addition.
The 22-year-old has slotted into the team so effortlessly in recent times and is arguably playing his best ever football.
He’s played every minute of the last six league games, which have seen the Reds keep clean sheets in all of them.
Gomez had to be patient earlier in the season when the likes of Lovren and Matip were impressing, which is why the latter should have to follow suit now.
