Liverpool cult hero once scored amazing goal vs Man United but couldn’t remember it

Manchester United and Liverpool will continue their fierce, full-blooded rivalry this weekend.

Man United are the visitors at Anfield after a shaky start to the season under Ruben Amorim, and could do with a confidence-boosting victory to quash the speculation around the head coach.

Arne Slot’s side, however, were tripped up by a surprise mini rut leading into the international break, having lost their last three matches across all competitions.

With just days to go until the big derby, players in both camps will dream of becoming heroes.

For one Liverpool legend, that was certainly the case, although he paid a heavy price.

Neil Ruddock seals Liverpool comeback vs Man United

United found themselves three goals up against their arch enemy in January 1994, after Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Denis Irwin had all found the net in an incredible 25-minute flurry.

Graham Souness looked to be on the brink after serious questions were asked of his future at Anfield, but he was able to breathe a sigh of relief after the most improbable of comebacks.

Nigel Clough bagged a brace to set up a grandstand finish, and the fightback was complete when centre-back Neil “Razor” Ruddock climbed highest to bravely head home.

He had clattered into Steve Bruce in the process and visibly wobbled while holding his head during the wild celebrations from his team-mates.

In fact, Ruddock later admitted he had effectively blacked out in the collision, and so had no recollection of scoring one of the famous goals in the club’s history.

Ruddock scored just 12 goals in his five-year spell at Liverpool, but his late intervention against United unsurprisingly remains his favourite.

“We were 3-0 down against our big rivals – Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs and Denis Irwin scored, but Nigel Clough got two back before half-time,” Ruddock told FourFourTwo. “I equalised in the last 10 minutes or so, a magnificent header.

“People always come up to me and say, ‘Razor, do you remember that goal you scored?’ I’m like, ‘I might, which one are you talking about?’ As if I scored millions!

“Everyone was walking out of the stadium and had to come running back in! I scored at the Anfield Road End, then ran back to the old standing Kop for kick-off – they were amazing scenes.

“That’s my favourite game I played in.”
