Liverpool have reportedly sent a warning to RB Leipzig that they are prepared to drop their interest in Timo Werner if the German side do not reduce his asking price – and instead target a player Danny Murphy wanted at Anfield in 2019.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for Timo Werner, though a number of European heavyweights have been suggested as rivalling the Reds for the Germany internationa. He has scored 30 goals in 39 outings this season.
He has a release clause of £50million but 90Min claim Liverpool are only willing to sign Werner if Leipzig reduce that figure to £40million. If Leipzig remain stubborn over his release clause, the report claims Liverpool will go after Ousmane Dembele.
Barcelona are said to be keen to sell Dembele, with his price tag less than half the £100million they paid for the World Cup winner. A loan could also work, and Danny Murphy said in 2019 that he thinks Dembele would oust Roberto Firmino.
“Dembele would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool,” Murphy was quoted as saying by Goal. “He’s not had the best time at Barcelona, but clearly has an abundance of talent and the ability to win games by himself.
“If he can recapture his belief in his ability then Liverpool would have a formidable front three with him, [Sadio] Mane and [Mohamed] Salah. When playing to his potential, I think he would edge [Roberto] Firmino out of the first team.”
TBR’s view – Should Liverpool heed Murphy’s advice?
Dembele does not have the confidence he once did when making the nine-figure move to Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund – but no doubt, the Frenchman is still a top, top player and at 23, he can easily regain that form.
Injury has prevented Dembele from mirroring the kind of form that has seen Werner become one of the most in-demand players in European football. But certainly, Dembele would be a stunning signing for Liverpool.
