Liverpool 20-year-old who's 'amazing in training' set to play against Shrewsbury
Liverpool are preparing to face lower league opposition in the form of Shrewsbury Town tomorrow, and they could be set to hand a start to 20-year-old midfielder, Leighton Clarkson.
Clarkson is back at Anfield after being recalled from a disappointing loan spell with Blackburn Rovers. The midfielder couldn’t quite make an impact, albeit Tony Mowbray’s men are flying.
However, according to The Athletic, Clarkson is in line to get the nod tomorrow against the Shrews. Jurgen Klopp is also expected to be back in the dugout, and a number of players are expected to get chances. Liverpool have been hit with Covid, injury, and players like Salah and Mane leaving for the AFCON.
The Athletic says that while it’s not been confirmed, Clarkson is set to start for the Reds. The 20-year-old has played for the Reds at first-team level. However, this will be a huge chance for him to stake a claim and impress Klopp. Clarkson has made his way through the ranks at Anfield. He featured regularly for the 18s and 23s, before playing in both the EFL Cup and Europe last season.
Despite not playing much at Ewood Park, he did impress Tony Mowbray in training. The Rovers boss admitting the Liverpool starlet was ‘amazing’ during the week.
TBR’s View: Leighton Clarkson To Seize Liverpool Chance?
There’ll be more than just Clarkson looking to impress. But this is a real chance for a player who hasn’t had the best loan spell to really make a mark.
The FA Cup is brilliant for players like Clarkson. Liverpool will be confident they can see off Shrewsbury with a few young players involved. Clarkson, then, will be desperate to impress.
A good performance here could set him up for the season. Whether that be Liverpool include him more, or he seals another loan move and plays more football in the second half of the campaign.
