Liverpool have announced that Caoimhin Kelleher has signed a new long-term contract at Anfield.

The 22-year-old has committed his future to the Reds on the back of a memorable campaign.

Alisson Becker spent some time on the sidelines last season, and Jurgen Klopp initially replaced the Brazilian with Adrian.

However, later on in the season, Klopp gave Kelleher a chance ahead of Adrian.

The Irishman made five first-team appearances and featured in both the Premier League and Champions League last season.

Kelleher kept two clean sheets, against Ajax and Wolves, and conceded just three goals in his five appearances.

He also won his first cap for Republic of Ireland earlier this month, coming on as a substitute against Hungary.

“Such a big club”

Speaking about the new contract, Kelleher told the Liverpool website: “I am happy to get it over the line and finally done.

“It was in the pipeline for a few months with negotiations and stuff, so I am delighted to get it done.

“For me, it was a positive moment to commit my future to the club for the next few years.

It’s such a big club and it’s an honour to be a part of it, so when I got the chance to sign for a few more years I was obviously delighted.

“I just want to keep my progress going at the club, really.”

Liverpool have a ‘first class’ talent in their ranks

An abdominal tear sidelined Kelleher for a significant part of the final stages of the season.

ROI boss Stephen Kenny bemoaned the Liverpool ace’s absence in March and sung his praises too.

“Caoimhin is injured at the moment as well,” he said in a virtual Q&A with Ireland supporters, as transcribed by the Irish Examiner.

“He has a slight abdominal tear, so we’re just hoping he can be okay.

“He’s due back training at the weekend of next week. Fingers crossed, he comes through okay because he’s got great potential.

“He was first class in all five games he played for Liverpool and I had him for 10 of my U21 games.”
