Liverpool coach thinks Arsenal have made a decision from which they ‘will benefit’

Liverpool assistant manager Peter Krawietz has praised Arsenal for being one of the sides “in the process of developing their footballing skills”, in conversation with Goal.com.

After the Gunners parted company with Unai Emery, they brought Mikel Arteta in from Manchester City as their new permanent head coach.

At the time, Arsenal were stuck in a rut, languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a meagre five wins all season amid some bad results and poor football.

Seven months on, the signs of improvement are there, with Arteta demanding – and getting – much higher standards on the training ground and on the pitch.

With Liverpool having lifted the Premier League title, attention will be turning to how the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea can overtake them.

Krawietz thinks the two London sides will provide stiff opposition after improving this season, while also admiring Graham Potter’s work at Brighton.

“I see first and foremost some teams that are in the process of developing their footballing skills,” he told Goal and SPOX.

“What has happened at Chelsea over the course of the season makes it clear that they will be a really good side. Arsenal, too, despite the difficult season, have already seen that they will benefit from the work under Mikel Arteta in the future.

“Or Brighton: although they were in the relegation battle, they still took a very football-oriented approach to the game. As a coach, I think it’s really cool when you follow your plan so consistently, even if the results don’t come straight away.”

Arsenal could hardly have picked a better head coach than Arteta – a club icon who learned the ropes under the great Pep Guardiola and now gets the chance to mould in his image a team that has underachieved in recent years.

While it’s not been plain sailing, it’s clear to see what the Spaniard is trying to do, and more often than not it comes off – though it is a big rebuilding job and patience, as well as assistance and resources, are needed.
