Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders has heaped praise on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s fantastic engine.

The full-back produced another fine performance at the weekend, assisting Sadio Mane’s late winner in the 2-1 win against Aston Villa.

The England international is enjoying a brilliant campaign for the Reds, with fans and pundits regularly praising his incredible passing range and technical abilities from right-back.

Rather than follow the crowd, Lijnders paid tribute to Alexander-Arnold for the side of his game that isn’t often acknowledged – his energy.

He told the club’s official website: “A Ferrari without fuel is nothing. But he has so much fuel, so much energy and will power to develop and make his game better, and to make our game better.

“I saw that when he was 15 and 16, but to see it still in a player – in the eyes and in training – I think it’s the reason why he takes the game further and further and sets a new benchmark for an offensive full-back.”

Alexander-Arnold has played every single minute of every single Premier League game for Liverpool so far this season.

TBR’s view

The 21-year-old is rightly praised for his wicked deliveries, but him constantly getting into the kind of crossing positions he does is down to his superb stamina.

It’s a good analogy from Lijnders – Alexander-Arnold can only mesmerise with the ball at his feet, because he has the fuel that allows him to keep getting to the areas where he can be effective.
