On 12th August 2014, 17-year-old Joe Gomez made his Charlton Athletic debut in the EFL Cup against Colchester United.
Four years on and Gomez is a regular in Liverpool’s defence with six caps for England.
On 9th August 2016, 18-year-old Ezri Konsa followed in Gomez’s footsteps by making his debut in the EFL Cup.
Konsa went on to establish himself as a Charlton regular that season, in the same fashion as Gomez, and he eventually moved to Brentford in summer 2018.
Now in the Championship with the Bees, Konsa is thriving and attracting attention from Arsenal.
The Gunners are willing to pay £15m for the England under-21 international but Liverpool should enter this race.
Liverpool can replicate Gomez’s success by bringing Konsa to Anfield.
There are many parallels that can be drawn between Gomez and Konsa – not just because they are both Charlton academy products.
Both players favour a role in central defence but are comfortable on the ball and able to play in other positions.
Konsa has played at right-back and in holding midfield during his career, which is testament to his ball-carrying displays.
Both Konsa and Gomez are also considered to be the future of the England defence, having forged their careers in the Football League and in England’s youth sides.
Konsa is an impressive young talent and one that Liverpool definitely need to be watching.
The 21-year-old can follow the blueprint set by Gomez from the Charlton academy to Liverpool and England stardom.
