Diego Carlos has been quoted by Spanish outlet Marca as saying that he will only leave Sevilla ahead of the summer transfer window, if he is to join “one of the top teams in the world” – amid reported interest from Liverpool.

Carlos, 27, has impressed since joining Sevilla last summer from French side Nantes. He has played 31 times in all competitions for Sevilla and that has seen some of Europe’s biggest clubs come calling.

The likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also interested in signing the uncapped Brazilian, who is believed to have an enormous £65million release clause – according to Spanish outlet El Desmarque.

Now, Carlos has provided Liverpool and any other big clubs with a boost ahead of the window, by stating he will only leave Sevilla if he is to join one of the best sides in Europe – which is a clear message to European champions Liverpool.

“It was clear to me that coming to Sevilla was a huge step in my career as it’s a big club, and if one day I leave, it will only be for one of the top teams in the world,” Carlos said.

TBR’s view – Carlos in, Lovren out, is the business of champions

Carlos can take Liverpool to the next level at the back, even if he does not play week in, week out. The Brazilian is in the form of his life and has got better and better over the years, improving even after a move to Sevilla.

Dejan Lovren, meanwhile, is beginning to decline and the Croatian ace is likely to leave in the coming months. Indeed, the former Southampton star has just 12 months remaining on his current Anfield contract.

Bringing Carlos in, and letting Lovren go, would be the business of champions.
