Liverpool are struggling to find a friendly opponent before next weekend’s Champions League final, according to the Times.

Given the long break between the end of the domestic season and the showpiece occasion in Madrid on June 1, the Reds have been reportedly on the hunt for a friendly to keep their sharpness.

But the report says that because many sides have already gone off on their holidays, meaning that there is currently no prospect of playing a match against senior opponents.

There is apparently the chance to play against their own academy side, but that perhaps does not provide the same level of competition and intensity needed to go into the biggest match of the season.

While opponents Tottenham might be glad of a gentler programme before the final, because they have struggled so badly with injuries and fatigue this term, Liverpool do not want to lose their sharpness.

There’s a slight danger that the Reds will suffer a drop off after failing to win the league last time out, when they played Wolves on 12 May.

If Klopp wants a friendly but cannot get one then that’s undoubtedly a blow to his preferred preparations as he seeks to end his hoodoo of losing in finals.
