Andy Lonergan calls Liverpool stopper Alisson the best in the world

The backup goalkeeper is clearly delighted to be working with the Brazilian.

Liverpool are busy preparing for a massive Merseyside-derby at Anfield this evening. The Reds know that a win could potentially extend their lead at the summit of the Premier League.

Boss Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to get his hands on the elusive piece of silverware for Liverpool’s otherwise glittering trophy cabinet.

A win tonight could push Marco Silva closer to the exit door with the Toffees just two points above the relegation zone.

One man who might get the chance to feature in tonight’s squad is Andy Lonergan. The goalkeeper has been on the bench three times this season and Alisson Becker is suspended this evening.

The Brazilian was dismissed against Brighton for handling outside of his area. As a result, Spanish stopper Adrian will deputise this evening.

Lonergan might be handed the place on the bench. He signed on a free to ease a goalkeeping crisis earlier in the season.

The Football League stalwart is clearly loving life at Liverpool.

He recently took to Twitter to heap praise on Alisson; considering him the best goalkeeper in the world after his Ballon d’Or recognition on Monday:

The man paid £90,000-a-week (Spotrac) came seventh in the Ballon d’Or poll. His exploits in last season’s Champions League triumph clearly didn’t go unnoticed.

Jackpot

Lonergan must be benefitting from working with such a world-class performer each day.

Even if Liverpool don’t extend his deal at the end of the season, he might earn another contract elsewhere based on his time at Anfield.

The 36-year-old has played for several clubs lower down the pyramid including Leeds, Middlesbrough and Bolton.

For Alisson, the challenge must be to continue improving. Now the world’s best, he must keep the bar high and Liverpool should reap the rewards.
