Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his first appearance for over a year in Friday’s win over Huddersfield. The midfielder has been out of action for several months after suffering a serious knee injury in last season’s Champions League semi-final win over Roma.
His return to action will represent a timely boost for Jurgen Klopp. He will want to tread carefully with him due to the severity of his injury, although he could be a big player between now and the end of the campaign.
Liverpool are still competing for silverware in the Premier League and Champions League and having a player like Oxlade-Chamberlain available is a natural boost.
According to the Daily Mail, the Reds could be about to offer the ex-Arsenal man a new contract. The 25-year-old will be offered a 12-month extension on his current £120k-a-week terms; keeping him at Anfield until 2023.
The deal represents a stroke of genius from Liverpool. Oxlade-Chamberlain was starting to show real quality prior to his injury and he looked tailor-made to a role in Klopp’s energetic midfield.
Klopp typically maintains he is happy with the current squad he has at his disposal at Liverpool and why wouldn’t he be? The club has been challenging for honours since his arrival and there are lots of things to be positive about.
Oxlade-Chamberlain getting back to full fitness and signing a new deal could save Liverpool millions during the summer.
Previously it has been said by various supporters and pundits that the Reds need more goals from their midfield trio. The return with a vengeance of Oxlade-Chamberlain can make that theory a distant memory.
