Former Liverpool players revel in UEFA Super Cup victory over Chelsea

Liverpool claimed their second piece of silverware in three months by beating Chelsea 5-4 on penalties to lift the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul.

The Blues played their part in an entertaining final. It just wasn’t to be, however, for Frank Lampard’s team who were edged out following a 2-2 draw after extra time.

Liverpool excelled from the spot in the shootout. The Reds scored all five of their penalties, whilst Tammy Abraham saw his effort saved by the legs of Adrian.

Olivier Giroud had fired Chelsea in front but moments into the second-half Sadio Mane had equalised for Liverpool.

It was the Reds who hit the front first in extra time. Mane again proving his worth to Jurgen Klopp’s team with his second of the night.

Chelsea weren’t to be denied, however, and Jorginho sent the game to penalties following a spot-kick that was perhaps fortunate to be given in the first place.

Following Klopp’s men claiming another piece of silverware for the cabinet, several ex-players took to Twitter to state their congratulations.

First, Lucas Leiva took to Twitter to praise the importance of Roberto Firmino, who was introduced at half-time:

Luis Garcia also took time out to praise the performance of the men in red. The former forward reserved special praise for goalkeeper Adrian after his shootout heroics:

Likewise, Jamie Carragher also heaped praise on Liverpool’s goalkeeper.

Adrian was only filling in for Alisson Becker who was injured in Friday’s game with Norwich City. Carragher was delighted with his contribution on the night:
