Liverpool will be without Adam Lallana for their Champions League clash against Red Bull Salzburg in Austria this evening.
The versatile performer won’t be risked in the freezing temperatures, although he isn’t expected to be out for long.
Boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed to the club’s official website that he wouldn’t travel, although he should return to training on Thursday.
With the £110,000-a-week (Spotrac) man to miss out this evening, that leaves Liverpool with a void to fill.
Lallana hasn’t been a regular in the team this season but has operated as a forward and in central midfield when called upon.
His absence could open the door for young talent Curtis Jones to get more minutes under his belt.
The 18-year-old midfielder played the last 14 minutes of Saturday’s 3-0 win at Bournemouth and has been named in the 19-man squad to travel to Austria.
Despite his tender years, Jones has captained the under-23 team more often than not this season.
He has scored 12 goals and registered six assists for the various academy teams during 2019/20.
Jones is pretty much the perfect replacement in the squad for Lallana. Both players can play in similar positions with Jones occasionally playing on the left-hand side for the under-23s this season.
If Jones could get on the pitch for another cameo appearance this evening it would be another feather for his cap.
It will delight Liverpool supporters that Klopp is trusting youth during a hectic fixture schedule.
The club’s academy is held in high regard and Jones might the next cab off the rank at Anfield, so to speak.
If he can prove he can hold his own then there’s every possibility of him earning more appearances between now and the end of the season.
Liverpool have been pretty unfortunate with injuries in midfield and that could bode well for Jones.
Later this month the Reds head out to Qatar for the Club World Championships.
Jones has been named in the travelling party for that tournament and that could represent more opportunities for the youngster.
