Liverpool will aim to defend their Champions League crown when the competition gets underway once again in September.

The club yesterday discovered that they will reside in Group E during the first stage of the competition alongside Napoli, Salzburg and Genk.

It is a favourable draw for Jurgen Klopp’s team and gives the Reds every chance of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition.

Liverpool were sensational during last year’s tournament. In the knockout stages, they defeated Bayern Munich, Porto and Barcelona before overcoming Tottenham in the final.

The Reds will renew their rivalry with Napoli having very nearly succumbed at the group stages to the Italian team last season. But for a late Alisson Becker save in their final group game, Napoli would have sent Liverpool packing.

This season, however, the draw could have been a lot worse for Liverpool and they will be heavily fancied to progress.

Following the draw, Liverpool supporters have taken to Twitter to offer their thoughts on the outcome.

The general consensus is that the six games should be negotiated with relative ease and the matches are being eagerly anticipated.
