Jurgen Klopp’s current back four isn’t going to win the league
Last weekend was certainly one to forget for Liverpool defenders as they surrendered a convincing lead to Bournemouth, but the return of Joel Matip failed to repair the Reds’ defensive woes. Matip himself was responsible for the second West Ham strike and things were only made more concerning when Dejan Lovren was forced off at half time.
In fact, the enforced substitution of Dejan Lovren helped Liverpool to improve as Ragnar Klavan provided a more stable partnership in the second half. Albeit the Hammers were happy to sit back and defend, but the Estonian dealt with the aerial threat of Andy Carroll well and handled the physicality of the West Ham front line.
Joel Matip certainly helped to solidify things after last week’s catastrophe, but it’s clear that more depth and quality is needed in this Liverpool defence if they are to mount a serious title challenge this season or next.
