Liverpool don’t need to be at their best

With just one shot on target, this was not the kind of free flowing Liverpool performance which has seen them garner a reputation as one of the most threatening attacks in the Premier League.

The Reds failed to retain the ball as they usually would and were unable to maintain their high press at a time of such fixture congestion and against a City defence more than comfortable to knock the ball around quickly to tire the Liverpool front three.

Defensively, there were massive improvements though. Ragnar Klavan stepped up and continued his good form in the absence of Joel Matip, and Simon Mignolet continued to show why he deserves a starting berth over Loris Karius. With clean sheets desperately lacking only a few weeks ago, it was a real turnaround for Jurgen Klopp and co.
