It was a top of the table clash which had all of the right signs to indicate that it could finally live up to the hype and produce a goalfest in the final Premier League match of 2016. Unfortunately, it failed to do so.
In a game of few chances for either side, Liverpool made their only shot on target of the game count as Georgino Wijnaldum headed home in superb style from an Adam Lallana cross with the City defence left watching on helpelessly.
The rest of the game was mostly a tense and tactical affair, with neither side particularly impressive in possession and neither capitalising on the chances that came their way.
For Liverpool, it strengthens their position as the closest challengers to Chelsea. For City, it means that they have dropped out of the top four heading into 2017 and may face a challenge to regain that place. It could be an interesting year ahead.
