Manchester City headed to Anfield knowing that defeat would allow Tottenham and Arsenal the opportunity to make it the first time since 2002 that neither Manchester side were in the top four on New Year’s Day, and that is exactly what happened as Georgino Wijnaldum’s header was enough to earn three points for Liverpool.
The Reds failed to produce a dominant display but were good value for the win thanks to a good defensive display against a toothless Manchester City side in a game of few chances for either team at Anfield in the last Premier League game of 2016.
