‘100%’: Stephen Warnock thinks Liverpool got away with penalty incident against Aston Villa

Liverpool might have scraped their way past Aston Villa in the end today, winning 1-0, but former defender Stephen Warnock thinks the Reds got away with one late on.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were leading going into the final moments when Joel Matip had a nightmare moment at the back which almost resulted in a penalty. Former Red Danny Ings went to ground, but the referee and VAR adjudged that Alisson was fine and didn’t award the penalty.

However, that wasn’t the opinion of Warnock. Watching the game for the BBC, the former left-back believed that it was ‘100%’ a penalty.

“Alisson has got away with one, 100%. It ricochets off him and as it falls, he spins in a circle, pats at the ball and takes Danny Ings’ legs away – that’s a penalty,” Warnock told the BBC.

Villa were outclassed for a lot of the game in fairness. However, Mo Salah’s winning penalty also wasn’t 100% clear-cut, and Steven Gerrard made his feelings known on that after the game as well.

Warnock, it seems, has pointed out what Gerrard obviously felt and Villa will no doubt feel hard done to at Anfield.

What a shame. The Villans could have snatched something late on and on another day the penalty gets given. As it is, it’s not to be, and Liverpool march on.

On the flipside to Villa’s argument here though, Liverpool will have felt they did enough to win by more than one goal in the end. They missed a few good chances late on, including one from Diogo Jota in injury time.

For now though, Aston Villa should take the positives. They competed well enough at the brilliant Premier League side and Steven Gerrard has plenty to build on.
