Lisandro Martinez and Paulo Dybala have taken to Instagram to laud Cristian Romero after the Tottenham Hotspur star helped Argentina reach the quarter-final of the World Cup on Saturday.

Lionel Scaloni’s men have reached the last eight after a Lionel Messi masterclass against Australia. Admittedly, the Socceroos made the game a lot more tense than the Copa America champions would have wanted it to be by halving the deficit late on.

Romero kept his place ahead of Martinez at the heart of the Argentina defence. And he produced another solid performance when you consider that the biggest threat Australia’s attack had was often their physicality.

Romero won four aerial duels, according to Whoscored. No player on either side was able to win more. And he has surely done enough to hold onto his place for the mouthwatering quarter-final tie with the Netherlands.

Certainly, many of the Tottenham star’s teammates have been left hugely impressed by his showing.

Romero took to Instagram to express his delight at the victory. And several players within the Argentina camp lauded the centre-back, with Rodrigo De Paul and Papu Gomez also responding…

The Netherlands were brilliant to nullify the threat of the USMNT in their last 16 tie. So it will be incredibly intriguing to see what Louis van Gaal comes up with when facing Argentina.

Of course, the US did not have a Messi in their ranks. But if the Dutch can somehow keep him quiet, they have a very strong chance. Plenty of those around the magician – Julian Alvarez aside – have not quite turned up so far.

The pressure is increasing on Argentina all the time, too. They have the talent to go all the way and provide one of the most incredible moments in football history by putting the World Cup trophy in Messi’s hands.

Coming up short does not bear thinking about right now.
