Linked with Aston Villa earlier this summer, Edouard Mendy heads to Rennes

Aston Villa’s hunt for a goalkeeper this summer has seen a whole host of names linked with a move to Villa Park. The likes of Jack Butland, Neil Etheridge and Mattia Perin were all linked with a switch to the Midlands before Tom Heaton eventually joined from Burnley. Another player that was reportedly on Aston Villa’s radar was Senegal international Edouard Mendy.

As reported by L’Equipe, Aston Villa and Norwich City both made inquiries about the availability of Mendy this summer.

It came after an impressive campaign with Stade de Reims for the talented stopper. Indeed, the report also stated interest from several Ligue 1 rivals in Marseille, Montpellier and Stade Rennais.

Now the 27-year-old has joined one of those clubs. Mendy has moved to Rennes in a deal reported by NEWS1 to be worth in the region of €4 million (£3.6m). Considering Goal had previously suggested Reims wanted €8 million (£7.3m) for the player, that has to be seen as a bargain piece of recruitment from the French side.

Of course, Aston Villa fans are likely happy with the goalkeeping recruitment they have done this summer.

Heaton is an experienced Premier League operator who has only got better over the years. Mendy, like Lovre Kalinic, Orjan Nyland or Pierluigi Gollini, before him would have been an unknown commodity in English football and a risk that could easily backfire for Dean Smith’s side.

With Heaton as first-choice and Jed Steer supporting, Aston Villa fans can feel comfortable with their options between the sticks this season.
