Manchester United will reportedly accept bids of just £15million for defender Chris Smalling and that has got to convince Arsenal to consider a summer move for the England international – after The Gunners were linked with Smalling in December.
Smalling, 30, has starred for Roma on loan from Manchester United this season. Prior to his loan move to the Serie A club, Smalling had been struggling for form and even lost his place in the England team of late.
But his 22 appearances for Roma has seen him rediscover his best form, and it is believed that Roma are keen to sign him on a permanent basis. Gazzetta Dello Sport, as per The Sun, have claimed that Manchester United will accept an offer of £15million.
Arsenal have signed Pablo Mari on a loan-to-buy deal from Brazilian side Flamengo, but the ex-Manchester City defender is hardly seen as the long-term answer to Arsenal’s problems at the heart of their defence.
It is a problem that has seen Arsenal struggle over the last few years. Shkodran Mustafi, David Luiz and Sokratis have all received criticism this season, while Rob Holding and Calum Chambers have struggled with injury.
The summer is seen as a window that Mikel Arteta will finally solve the defensive woes at The Emirates. The Mirror claimed back in December that Arsenal were interested in Smalling, while Everton and Leicester were also keen.
Surely at such a bargain price, Arsenal have got to rival Roma in the summer to bring Smalling back to England to finally solve their defensive issues – especially given that they were linked with the former Fulham man before the January window.
At just £15million, it is an absolute no-brainer for Arsenal to rekindle their reported interest in Smalling – especially given his stunning form for Roma in Italy.
