Gary Lineker says Mo Salah should have beaten Ronaldo to PL player of the month award
Liverpool forward Mo Salah has missed out on winning the Premier League player of the month award for September, with Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo beating him to the punch.
Both players notched three goals in September. Salah scored on three separate occasions, against Leeds, Brentford, and Crystal Palace. Ronaldo, meanwhile, struck twice against Newcastle, before hitting one against West Ham and drawing a blank at home to Villa.
Of course, both players have strong arguments for the award. But some feel Salah, who scored an exceptional goal against Man City last week to kick off October, should have taken the honours.
And among those to be in that line of thinking were former England striker and MOTD host, Gary Lineker. Taking to Twitter, Lineker delivered his verdict, and confirmed his belief that the Liverpool star should have won.
Lineker is a big fan of both players and isn’t known for taking sides really when it comes to United and Liverpool. However, he clearly feels Salah is the man here.
Neither player registered an assist in September. Salah, though, did score three times in the Champions League, albeit, it counts for nothing in this award.
TBR’s View: Ronaldo-factor edges it for the United man
Any other month, Salah scoops this up no problem. But there is a feeling that the hype around CR7 has got him this one. Sure, he has been class and made a big impact.
But has that impact been the same as Salah’s? Probably not.
Both players, though, are still defying the odds and putting in superb displays and for that, they should both be lauded.
