Lille teenager Yanis Bensaber was a surprise inclusion in a Rangers academy side that drew 3-3 against Corby Town on Wednesday night, and he scored in what was seemingly a trial.
Never has the 19-year-old been named on Rangers team sheets beforehand, but he lined up alongside the likes of Nathan Young-Coombes, Kai Kennedy and Ciaran Dickson.
The Gers’ youngsters played out an exciting draw in the friendly clash, which also saw Young-Coombes score in the first minute, before Andy Dallas’ cross was turned home by Stephen Kelly.
Rangers fan account Elfideldo, known to report on the Gers youngsters, showed his following before the match a picture of the team sheet – including Lille youngster Bensaber who obviously made an impression.
TBR’s view
Steven Gerrard was recently quoted as saying that it is about finding the balance in signing players who can perform in the first team right now, but also bringing in players who can become senior stars in years to come.
Recent reports have shown this. Bringing in Jordan Jones and Steven Davis, Rangers have counteracted that with the signing of Jake Hastie. Bensaber could be just another example of this.
The teenager has played five times for France’s Under-16 side, and is able to play out wide or up front. It remains to be seen if the attacker will sign a permanent deal with the Gers.
