Lille manager Gerard Lopez has told French outlet RMC Sport that Liverpool have been in contact with winger Nicolas Pepe, and that there have been two offers for the in-form ace.
Pepe, 24, was in sensational form for Lille last season as they finished in second place in the top tier of French football – qualifying for the Champions League. Ivory Coast international Pepe was at the heart of that.
Indeed, Pepe found the back of the net 22 times in the league – playing in all 38 matches. He also showed his creative side, clocking up 11 assists. It has unsurprisingly seen him linked with Liverpool.
RMC Sport claim Pepe is Liverpool’s main priority this summer, and now Lille boss has confirmed the Reds interest by claiming Jurgen Klopp’s side have spoken to Pepe’s representatives over a move this summer.
“I know there have been discussions with the player, not with us as a club,” Lopez said. “Liverpool have players in those positions, and I read that maybe there was players who leave, or not. I am not particularly focused on Liverpool. But it is true that there have been discussions with agents.”
TBR’s view – Pepe is amazing, but would he fit in at Liverpool?
Liverpool have one of the best front threes in European football. Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane shone last season once again, clocking up 69 goals throughout the 2018-19 campaign.
But without the front three, Liverpool do not boast the depth that the likes of Manchester City have. Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi are certainly excellent players, but they are not of the level of the first three. Or Pepe.
French newspaper L’Equipe also covered Liverpool’s interest last summer and claimed he is worth £70million. Based on last season, he would be excellent competition and certainly a good option for that figure.
