Former Watford striker and now regular Talksport pundit, Troy Deeney, has compared Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana to Liverpool star, Virgil van Dijk.
Fofana was in exceptional form as the Foxes saw off Wolves last night in a tight game won by a Jamie Vardy penalty.
The 19-year-old was signed in the summer with Brendan Rodgers short on defensive options. But with Caglar Soyuncu injured, Fofana has stepped into the fold and has looked the part ever since.
And Deeney, speaking on Talksport today, believes Fofana can go right to the very top just as Van Dijk has.
“I think Fofana, the centre-halve. He for me at 19, he’s showing very similar to what Van Dijk showed at Southampton when he came down from Celtic.
“I think in two years time, one of the big, big boys will come in for him.”
Fofana has started to develop a partnership with Jonny Evans and looks worth every penny of the reported £36.5m Leicester spent on him this summer.
His former Saint-Etienne defensive partner, William Saliba, is having contrasting fortunes with Arsenal. The teenager has been left out by Mikel Artet altogether, while Fofana shines in the blue of Leicester.
World-class potential – TBR View
There’s no other way of putting it. Leicester seem to have pulled off a massive coup in signing Fofana, even if he did cost such a big sum.
But that money will be nothing if he continues on this upward trend. He’s strong, quick, reads the game well, comfortable on the ball, everything.
Leicester are a good team themselves but Deeney is right, if Fofana continues as he is going then a big move won’t be too far off down the road.
