Liverpool have announced that Brazil legend Claudio Taffarel will join the Reds coaching setup as a goalkeeping coach.

The 55-year-old, who also has a coaching role with the Selecao, will combine his national team duties with those at Anfield.

Taffarel will link up with John Achterberg and Jack Robinson to work with the Liverpool goalkeepers.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has spoken highly of the 1994 World Cup winner, deeming him a “really nice addition” to the coaching staff.

Klopp also revealed that he spoke to Alisson Becker, who has worked with Taffarel in the Brazil setup, ahead of moving for him.

“We want to build kind of our own philosophy in goalkeeping because we all agree it’s its own game,” said the Liverpool boss.

“So that’s why we wanted to have another completely different view on it.

“We spoke to Ali because two of the best goalies in the world are Brazilians and so we found a solution with bringing in Taffarel as a really nice addition to our whole coaching staff.

“We really think it can give us just a different view again, to look at different things.

“We really want to really be a proper goalkeeping school in world football and so that’s why we’re bringing in a third very, very experienced goalkeeper coach.”

Plenty of fans, including those of Galatasaray and Brazil, have praised Liverpool for their appointment:

Taffarel won 101 caps for Brazil and lifted the World Cup in 1994, going on to make the final four years later.

He also had stints in Europe with Parma and Galatasaray, winning two league titles and a UEFA Cup with the latter.

After retiring in 2003, Taffarel re-joined Galatasaray as a goalkeeper coach

He would go on to also have two interim spells in charge of the Turkish club in 2014 and 2015.
