Aston Villa have announced the permanent signing of Bjorn Engels. The defender signs for an undisclosed fee after moving to Stade Reims this summer.
Engels was on loan with Reims last season and he played 34 times for the French club. In March, Reims triggered the option-to-buy clause, making his move form Olympiakos permanent.
However, he has already moved on and completed a move to the Premier League. The towering 6ft 4in defender, who started out at Club Brugge, will play Premier League football with Aston Villa.
Engels has joined Dean Smith’s project at Villa Park. The Villans have just won promotion to the top-flight and have been very active in the transfer window. Engels is the eighth summer signing.
The 24-year-old will join a centre-back department with three other new signings. Kortney Hause and Tyrone Mings both joined permanently after successful loan spells last season. And Ezri Konsa has also moved to Aston Villa, reuniting with his former Brentford boss Smith.
Aston Villa’s centre-back options now look strong and it could even spell the end of James Chester’s career. Here are some tweets from Villa fans imagining the partnership between Engels and Mings.

I am the only one that thinks the potential Mings / Engels partnership could be very like Mellberg/Laursen partnership? #avfc
