‘Like a new signing’: Journalist claims £14m Aston Villa man is looking so much ‘fitter and leaner’ in pre-season

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson has improved his fitness ahead of the upcoming season, according to Ashley Preece.

The journalist has claimed in a Q&A on Birmingham Live that the 27-year-old looked ‘much fitter and leaner’ during a friendly against League Two outfit Walsall on Saturday.

He added that Sanson could become ‘like a new signing’ for Aston Villa, provided he manages to stay fit during the upcoming season.

The Frenchman joined the Villains during the January window last year and has struggled to make an impact so far.

Since making the switch from Marseille for a fee of £14 million (Birmingham Live), Sanson has made just six Premier League starts for Villa.

He had put up decent numbers at his former club, scoring 25 goals and putting up 22 assists in 157 appearances across all competitions for Marseille.

But the Frenchman has struggled for game time at Villa Park and has only made 20 appearances in a claret-and-blue shirt, with 13 of them coming as a substitute.

Sanson will have his work cut out if he is to force his way back into Gerrard’s plans. Last season, he fell behind Douglas Luiz, Marvelous Nakamba, John McGinn, Tom Iroegbunam, Carney Chukwuemeka and Jacob Ramsey in the pecking order.

The Villains have also added Boubacar Kamara to their midfield options after he joined from Marseille this summer. So, it may be a tough ask for him to break into the team.

But it does seem that Sanson is not giving up on making the grade at Villa Park.

The midfielder apparently appears to be in much better physical condition this term when compared to last, and that might just convince Gerrard that he is worth persevering with for the time being.

TBR’s View: It’s A Make Or Break Season For Sanson

With three years remaining on his deal, this could be a make or break season for Sanson at Villa Park. If he fails to rediscover the form that earned him the move, Villa boss Steven Gerrard may decide to move the player on.

By next summer, Sanson will only have two years remaining on his contract and if his form doesn’t merit him an extension, the club may decide to cash in.
