Leeds United took on Manchester United in a pre-season friendly yesterday and were on the wrong end of a 4-0 thrashing from the Premier League side. It was a difficult performance from Leeds, who have split their first-team squad in order to travel to Australia for pre-season.
But the bulk of Leeds’ regular first-teamers from last season were on show against their old rivals and many struggled to impress.
In particular, Liam Cooper had a game to forget.
The Leeds captain improved massively under Marcelo Bielsa last season. However, toward the end of the campaign, his form slipped. Whilst Kiko Casilla got plenty of blame for Leeds’ play-off defeat to Derby County, Cooper was certainly not blameless.
Against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, the Leeds defender struggled to control the defensive unit. Young Dutchman Tahith Chong then tangled the Scottish defender in knots, before the Leeds man rashly gave away a penalty.
It was another sign, as far as Leeds fans are likely to be concerned, that the club need to sign another central defender this summer.
Pontus Jansson is gone and whilst there is hope over the new recruit Ben White, Leeds are still looking light in the position. With Cooper looking out of form, not bringing in a viable alternative could easily come back to haunt Leeds in any promotion campaign.
