A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have commented on Twitter after Danny Rose suggested that Spurs were hoping to bring Harry Maguire to North London three-and-a-half years ago.
Maguire became the world’s most expensive defender when he joined Manchester United from Leicester City last summer for £80million.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed a steady rise to the top of the game, clocking up over 100 appearances for Sheffield United as a youngster and switching to Hull for £2.5million in 2014.
Announced on the same day as Andrew Robertson, Maguire spent three years on Humberside and eventually earned himself a move to Leicester for £17million.
Prior to joining the 2015-16 Premier League champions, Maguire was on Pochettino’s radar, according to Rose, who believes the club made an attempt to sign the 6ft 4in man in wake of his display in the 3-0 loss to Spurs in December 2016.
“Touching on Harry, we played Hull at White Hart Lane and I think we won 2-0 or 3-0, I think (Steve Bruce) was manager, and straight away our gaffer was all over Harry,” he told the Lockdown Tactics podcast.
“I think they were in for him. Once Poch had took a liking to him, I started to notice him straight away.”
With Maguire having cost Hull £2.5million when Pochettino became interested in him, it’s very much a case of what might have been for Tottenham, now he’s worth £80million, has become Manchester United captain and is a fully-fledged England international.
