‘Let’s get it right’… Chris Sutton says 25-year-old Spurs player was acting like an ‘idiot’ last night

Tottenham lost 4-1 to Chelsea on Monday evening, and while that scoreline would suggest that it was a thrashing, that couldn’t be any further from the truth.

Indeed, Spurs were more than a match for Chelsea until a few moments of madness took the game away from them.

Cristian Romero really kickstarted the downfall for Spurs as he was almost red-carded for kicking out at Reece James during the first-half, before picking up his inevitable red card minutes later for a foul on Enzo Fernandez that led to a penalty.

Romero’s dismissal was followed by a red card for Destiny Udogie, and from that point onwards, Spurs stood no chance.

Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Chris Sutton had plenty to say about Romero’s performance and his antics against Chelsea, describing him as an idiot for playing in such a reckless manner.

Romero idiotic

Sutton gave his verdict on the 25-year-old.

“I mean, let’s get it right, Romero his behaviour was idiotic,” Sutton said.

“He had the slight kick out just minutes before and I really don’t know what he’s thinking.

“A World Cup winner, he knows exactly what he’s trying to do.”

Foolish

We have to agree with Sutton, Romero’s performance on Monday was bordering on ridiculous.

The Argentine was lucky to get away with the first incident with Reece James, that was the perfect time for him to take a breath, calm himself down and not do anything stupid.

Romero should’ve just focused on getting himself together and getting into half-time so he could compose himself. But what happened instead? He needlessly lunged into a tackle minutes later getting himself sent off and giving away a penalty.

Romero cost Tottenham the game in that moment, and you just can’t excuse that sort of behaviour from a player who is supposed to be a senior leader.
