Liverpool goalkeeper Shamal George joined Marine on loan on deadline day. On the final day of the summer transfer window, Liverpool confirmed that George will join non-league side Marine until January.

Marine are a non-league team based in Liverpool. The Mariners play in the Northern Premier League Division One West (eighth tier) after their relegation last season. After two loan spells in the Football League, this was an unexpected decision.

George previously spent time with Carlisle United and Tranmere Rovers – both in League Two. He played seven games for Carlisle and three times for Tranmere. But now he is dropping down by four divisions for his next loan stint.

After joining Marine, George had a message for fans on Twitter. The 21-year-old was defiant despite his untypical loan move. He said: “Building myself back up. Let people talk.”

TBR’s view

George faces an uphill battle to convince Jurgen Klopp that he will be good enough for Liverpool in the future. With Alisson Becker, Adrian and Andy Lonergan, Liverpool have three senior stoppers in their ranks.

In Kamil Grabara, they have a young goalkeeper getting experience in the Championship. Caoimhin Kelleher is the first-choice academy goalkeeper and then George is competing with six others on Liverpool’s youth books. Even if he impresses for Marine, he is unlikely to turn Klopp’s head. But George clearly has self-belief in his own ability and is determined to make a success of his career.
