A number of Newcastle United fans have expressed their disappointment with Matt Ritchie’s display for the Magpies on Saturday.
Steve Bruce’s charges headed to Watford and began brightly, Dwight Gayle giving them a 23rd-minute lead with a goal from close range.
However, Watford were quick out of the blocks in the second half and were handed a lifeline in the 52nd minute.
Ritchie brought Kiko Femenia down in the box to concede a penalty, which Troy Deeney duly slotted home.
Nine minutes from time, the Hornets captain was given another opportunity from the spot after Javier Manquillo hauled down Ismaila Sarr in the box.
Deeney made it two from 12 yards, rifling down the middle, and gave Watford three crucial points in their battle against the drop.
Newcastle, however, were left deflated by the second-half collapse, with many players flattering to deceive after the interval.
Chronicle Live awarded Ritchie 4 out of 10 and wrote: “Blotted copybook by giving away penalty to allow Watford to level the game up. Should know better by now.”
This was an opinion shared by numerous Newcastle fans, who took to Twitter to give their thoughts on the £45,000-a-week man:
Normally a fan of Ritchie but he’s winding me up today …shocking

Shocking. Ritchie and manquillo need to be dropped for next game. Lessons need to be learnt.

Matt Ritchie has been a liability all season. Missed penalties, causing own goals and now giving away needless avoidable penalties. #NUFC

Not going to start hating on Matt Ritchie, as he’s won us more games than lost them, but his rashness in giving away the first penalty turned this game around. Am positive we would have won this at a canter. #NUFC

Manquillo and Ritchie should have known better than giving the Watford players a reason to go down. Two totally different halves of football! #nufc

Its 100% a penalty. Just because it isn’t blatant doesn’t mean it isn’t so. Stupid from Ritchie to give him the opportunity to go down like that.

Baffled at way #nufc approached 2nd half. Substitutions didn’t make sense to me with Ritchie one of our better performers bar rash challenge for pen. Moving Manquillo over to left was instant disaster. Needed some central midfield changes for me as we were getting totally overrun
