‘Lessons need to be learnt’, ‘normally a fan’: Some Newcastle fans think £45k-a-week man must do better

A number of Newcastle United fans have expressed their disappointment with Matt Ritchie’s display for the Magpies on Saturday.

Steve Bruce’s charges headed to Watford and began brightly, Dwight Gayle giving them a 23rd-minute lead with a goal from close range.

However, Watford were quick out of the blocks in the second half and were handed a lifeline in the 52nd minute.

Ritchie brought Kiko Femenia down in the box to concede a penalty, which Troy Deeney duly slotted home.

Nine minutes from time, the Hornets captain was given another opportunity from the spot after Javier Manquillo hauled down Ismaila Sarr in the box.

Deeney made it two from 12 yards, rifling down the middle, and gave Watford three crucial points in their battle against the drop.

Newcastle, however, were left deflated by the second-half collapse, with many players flattering to deceive after the interval.

Chronicle Live awarded Ritchie 4 out of 10 and wrote: “Blotted copybook by giving away penalty to allow Watford to level the game up. Should know better by now.”
