Queens Park Rangers director of football Les Ferdinand has responded when asked by Newcastle United Fans TV if he would return to St. James’ Park – and the Championship club’s chief opened the door to a future move.

As a player, Ferdinand spent two seasons at Newcastle between 1995 and 1997, and is considered one of the club’s best ever strikers – scoring a huge 41 goals in 68 Premier League games. He ended with a tally of 50 in 84 outings.

Since his retirement, Ferdinand has spent more than five years at QPR following his move to Loftus Road as director of football in 2015. He has overseen the project of stablising QPR after their relegation from the Premier League.

Asked if he would entertain a return to Newcastle amid a potential £300million takeover, Ferdinand stated he has a job to do at QPR and does not believe he has completed that as of yet – but did open the door to a future move.

“I’ve got a job to do at QPR,” Ferdinand said. “I wasn’t just going to QPR to cut my cloth. I’ve gone here to do a job and the job is not completed yet. I love Newcastle United and I had a great time there.

“But I want to finish what I’m doing at QPR before I look at doing anything else. At some stage, I would love to be back involved at the club if the opportunity came about – but I’m still very committed to what I’m doing at QPR.”

TBR’s view – Newcastle will need a director of football

Mike Ashley’s reportedly pending exit from the club as owner is likely to see the exit of Lee Charnley in weeks or months to come, and that means the Toon will need to find another director of football.

Names such as RB Leipzig’s head of recruitment Paul Mitchell, or Lille’s sporting director Luis Campos have been mentioned, but why not a Toon legend? Ferdinand could be ideal and with an offer on the table, he will be tempted.
