Report: Newcastle boss Steve Bruce will listen to offers for 'intelligent' ace; made 34 appearances last season

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is open to an exit for ‘intelligent’ defender Florian Lejeune, according to The Athletic.

The publication is claiming that despite the fact the Frenchman will return for pre-season, the club are open to offers.

Following news he’s been transfer-listed, it’s being claimed the Geordies are looking for a defender.

There are question marks of the central defender’s durability from Bruce and the Magpies. Lejeune has just a year to run on his current contract and could yet have his deal extended.

He spent last season on loan with La Liga outfit Alaves, where he impressed massively.

TBR View: Newcastle and Bruce’s stance baffling amid talks over future of Lejeune

An exit for Lejeune would be a baffling move from Newcastle.

Last season was a terrible campaign for the St James’ Park outfit, especially in defence.

Across all five centre-backs, Federico Fernandez played the most minutes, just 2,083. That means the club’s leading defender completed just over 23 full games in a 38 fixture season.

It’s a sign of how desperately the outfit crave a consistent defender.

And Lejeune can be that figure after playing 34 league games last term. The player was influential in helping the Spanish outfit stay in La Liga.

His defensive and on-the-ball ability makes him the perfect player for Bruce’s team moving forward.

However, there are question marks over his fitness. During his time in England, the former Girona player has suffered two knee ligament injuries.

He has failed to complete an injury-free season with the Geordies since signing in 2017.

And whilst he did have a brilliant campaign with Alaves, La Liga is a slower league than England.

There maybe question marks over the player’s fitness, however, with Bruce eyeing a defender, Lejeune is the perfect figure.

Spending endless amounts of money on a new recruit would be a horrible decision from the club.
