Leighton Baines will reportedly not be moving to Rangers this summer

Leighton Baines will not be moving to Rangers from Premier League club Everton this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

They report that the Toffees are keen to keep the club stalwart at Goodison Park for another season and have offered him an extension to his current deal.

The report says that links to a reunion with former England team-mate Steven Gerrard at Ibrox are wide of the mark.

Former England captain Gerrard has been able to snare Jermain Defoe, who he also knew from his England days, but Baines will apparently not be joining the duo north of the border.

Baines earns £70,000 a week at Everton currently – according to Spotrac – so even if he took a major pay cut to come to Rangers, he would not have come cheap.

But he would have been worth it, he’s on another level to any of Rangers’ current left back options and the experience his 30 England caps gives him – not to mention a decade of service in the Premier League – would have been invaluable.

Gerrard knows that he can only really rely on ageing former team-mates and younger gambles in order to secure the quality needed to haul in Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership and Baines would have been a serious coup.
