Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths goal against St. Johnstone in the Betfred Cup was extremely timely, as Moussa Dembele scored a brace for Lyon.

It was far from a vintage performance from Celtic, but they got the job done.

Most importantly, they bounced back from the disappointing defeat against Kilmarnock.

It’s been quite the underwhelming start to the season from Brendan Rodgers’ side, who are languishing in sixth place in the Scottish Premiership table.

Two defeats from their opening six means they’re six points behind leaders Hearts.

Goalscoring has been an issue for Celtic, with just six scored in the league so far.

Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard have bagged just one goal each.

However, the former does have two goals in the Betfred Cup now, and he might well have had more to his name had he been a bit more clinical on Wednesday night.

Dangerous Griffiths eases Dembele blow

Griffiths’ goal was particularly timely though, with Dembele firing his first two goals for Lyon against Dijon.

The Frenchman, who left Parkhead on transfer deadline day for £19.7 million, has taken three games to get off the mark.

His departure received a mixed reaction from supporters.

The fact is Dembele is a goalscorer, who had a decent record as a Celtic player.

It was starting to become a bit of a concern that the Bhoys were, and still are, struggling to score goals.

But Griffiths could have had a hat-trick against St. Johnstone, and looks dangerous for the Scottish champions.

His goal on Wednesday certainly eases any blow of seeing Dembele finish two great goals.
