Leif Davis now has good chance of staying at Leeds - journalist
Journalist Beren Cross has told a Q&A on Leeds Live that he has heard that Leif Davis has a good chance of staying at Leeds United this coming season and acting as cover for Junior Firpo.
Davis is in an interesting position at Elland Road. He has arguably impressed whenever he has featured for the Whites. And his two Premier League appearances for the club came against the two Manchester sides.
However, he left on loan for Bournemouth last summer. And the Cherries had the option to buy the left-back. So it appeared to be the end for him at Leeds.
If he impressed on the south coast, the club would surely trigger that option. Meanwhile, if he struggled in the Championship, Leeds would hardly have reason to bring him back into the fold.
Bournemouth have not kept Davis. And he has now returned to Thorp Arch to start training with the majority of the Leeds squad.
Leeds have been very busy in this window. But it does seem very quiet when it comes to signing a new left-back. And that may concern many fans.
Firpo had a difficult first season at Elland Road. And Leeds will be without Stuart Dallas for several months.
There has been speculation Davis could leave before the deadline. But Cross has claimed that the door is open for the 22-year-old to be in Jesse Marsch’s plans next year.
“The last we heard Davis was remaining a part of the squad and had a good chance of sticking around to back up Firpo down the left,” he told Leeds Live.
“Of course, so much changes in the market and Marsch’s thinking, but right now he will be in the group which goes to Australia.”
Davis has chance of staying at Leeds
Leeds fans may be a little concerned about Davis sticking around. He is young and still improving. But no player loaned out during Bielsa’s tenure went on to play for the club again while the Argentinian was in charge. So it seemed an ominous sign to loan him out.
It also adds to the potential pressure on Firpo’s shoulders.
Marsch does have other options. But in a window where Leeds appear to have done a lot of good business, it does seem that they may end up with one position where using square pegs is still necessary.
