Leicester City fans react as James Maddison scores audacious ‘Panenka’ penalty

James Maddison scored a ‘Panenka’ penalty as Leicester City beat Newcastle United in the EFL Cup. Maddison dinked the ball over Karl Darlow during the penalty shoot-out at St James’ Park.

The England U21 midfielder, who is destined for a senior call-up soon, is high on confidence at the moment. He scored the opening goal of the game with a deflected free-kick before Yoshinori Muto equalised for Newcastle.

When the game went to penalties, it was there for the taking. But Leicester prevailed thanks to two fine saves from Kasper Schmeichel and some clinical finishing from the spot from the Foxes.

Maddison produced a ‘Panenka’ to fool Darlow. After the Newcastle stopper dived to his left, Maddison delicately chipped the ball straight down the middle of the goal. And while Leicester fans loved this, it also brought back memories of Yann Kermorgant.

The French striker tried the ‘Panenka’ against Cardiff City in the play-off semi-final penalty shoot-out in 2010 but David Marshall saved it. Maddison, however, had much better fortune.

Here are some tweets from Leicester fans reacting to Maddison’s penalty.
