Sunderland edged past relegation-battling Walsall yesterday to remain within two points of the automatic promotion spots.

After falling behind, Sunderland turned things around and scraped a 2-1 win over Walsall at The Stadium of Light.

With a game in hand, they trail second-placed Barnsley by two points so automatic promotion is within their grasp.

And Sunderland’s equalising goal came from an unexpectedly reliable source: Lee Cattermole. For the third consecutive home match, the 30-year-old midfielder has found the net.

Cattermole is not renowned for his goal scoring prowess. In fact, in nine seasons with Sunderland prior to this campaign, Cattermole had only scored three goals in well over 200 games.

But this term, the ex-Middlesbrough midfielder has netted six times, including three in his last three matches at The Stadium of Light.

Cattermole’s all-round performances have been impressive and he is now adding goals to his game at the right time in Sunderland’s promotion push.

Sunderland fans are enjoying Cattermole’s newfound ability to get on the score sheet and have taken to social media to praise the long-serving midfield man.

Here are some tweets about Cattermole after yesterday’s goal.
