Leeds United keen to bolster defensive ranks with Brentford enforcer

Leeds United are keen to bolster their defensive ranks by landing Brentford central defender Yoann Barbet, according to a report in L’Equipe.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at Griffin Park this summer and seems increasingly likely to depart the West London-based club.

As per the report, Leeds are interested in his services, along with Montpellier, Angers, Norwich and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Barbet has been with the Bees for four years but it does seem odd that no contract offer has been forthcoming, especially considering the rapport he has with the supporters.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa will be desperate to bolster his defensive ranks this summer. He has gone through the full season almost at Elland Road, with just Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper as recognised senior centre-backs.

TBR Verdict

The Whites are in the hunt for central defensive recruits and Barbet will represent good business regardless of what division Leeds are in.

In four years at Griffin Park, he has proved a reliable performer for the Bees and his experience of English football is also a plus.

Perhaps the decisive pull towards Leeds making a move is the financial aspect. Given that his contract is due to run out, they won’t need to pay a transfer fee.

Barbet arriving on a free would be a quality bit of business for Leeds. They shouldn’t be finished there though defensively and could arguably do with one more centre-back arriving in the summer.
