Leeds wanted free agent N'Koulou in summer, now centre-back crisis should prompt move - TBR View

Leeds United fans are watching another centre-back crisis unfold before them, the same as last season. But Nicolas N’Koulou could be the answer.

Last season, Leeds were forced to play with Luke Ayling and Liam Cooper at centre-back. Diego Llorente and Robin Koch were injured after signing.

Now, it is a similar story. Pascal Struijk is suspended for Friday’s clash against Newcastle, while Koch and Llorente are injured again.

The likelihood being, that Ayling is going to have come into the middle of the defence again – while Jamie Shackleton plays on at right-back.

It is unusual for a side with four central defenders to often get caught out in that position – when it comes to injuries. But clearly, Leeds need cover.

Keeping Ayling at right-back is important, too. As Liverpool showed last season, putting round pegs in square holes disrupts the balance of the team.

Leeds could do with another centre-back. One Marcelo Bielsa knows well, one that he can trust to come in and do a job when others are unavailable.

Why Leeds need N’Koulou, again

Step forward, N’Koulou. Back in March, Italian newspaper Tuttosport said Leeds had tabled an offer for the 72-time Cameroon international.

Bielsa knows the 31-year-old from his time at Marseille. But N’Koulou is now without a club, having seen his Torino contract come to an end.

Could it make sense for Leeds to hand the defender a contract until the end of the season, just to cover Leeds when in need of a centre-back?
