Matheus Pereira scored arguably the goal of the game on Sunday despite a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal which ultimately succumbed West Bromwich Albion to relegation from the Premier League – and Simon Johnson wants the Brazilian ace signed.
Despite Arsenal cruising to victory after goals from Emile Smith-Rowe and Nicolas Pepe, 25-year-old Pereira had not given up as he picked up possession on the counter but inside his own half. Jinking past players, he eventually found the far corner.
A brilliant goal, Pereira has clearly been the club’s best player this season by quite some distance – having a hand in 16 goals during his 32 appearances. Scoring 11 times, 10 in the Premier League, Pereira has also laid on five assists for the Baggies.
The Athletic claimed last month that Aston Villa are considering a move for Pereira, who earns just £30,000 (Telegraph) a week at the Hawthorns. Now, ex-Leeds striker Johnson has urged Marcelo Bielsa’s side to bring Pereira to Elland Road.
TBR’s view – Leeds could do with an attacking midfielder
Tyler Roberts has shown flashes of brilliance as he continues to enjoy a run in the starting line-up, but he lacks the composure of Pereira in the final third. Naturally, he is a striker and that little bit more guile and creativity is required.
Rodrigo is capable of that, but he is now 30 and he might also prefer to play up top – as he did with Valencia and with the Spain national team. An attacking midfielder is needed and Pereira’s form in the Premier League makes him a no-brainer for Leeds.
