Leeds urged to sign Celtic player, by Noel Whelan

Noel Whelan has told BBC Radio Leeds – as per Inside Futbol – that Leeds United have got to consider a move to sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard with the Frenchman expected to leave Parkhead this summer.

Edouard, 23, is the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership this season with 16 goals in the league. He has 20 efforts in 33 games in all competitions, and a whopping 81 goals in 161 appearances for the Bhoys, who recently suffered defeat in defence of the title.

Rangers have pipped Celtic to the title, and ended their pursuit of 10 in a row – with Steven Gerrard gaining legendary status on the other side of Glasgow. Such is the loss, that an influx of Celtic players are expected to be offloaded this summer.

A revamp is expected, and Leeds icon Whelan – who played for three Scottish clubs in Aberdeen, Dunfermline and Livingston – thinks the Whites should consider a move to sign the former PSG ace. It is believed a fee of £15million might be enough.

“I’m looking at people like Edouard up at Celtic”, Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds following Monday’s defeat to West Ham.“He’s got 12 months left on his contract. Leicester sniffing around him. At 23, he covers most bases when you look at a centre forward.

“In terms of goals, set pieces that he can take as well and what he’s done at Celtic over the years. He wants a new challenge, you can see that. £15m to £20m gets you that player. He could be a very good addition to the team, but hey, I’m not Victor Orta.”

TBR’s view – Edouard would be a stunning signing, but Leicester winning

Indeed, the Mail reported last week that Leicester are leading the race for Edouard’s signature. His exit from Celtic is inevitable and the Premier League looks likely. The Mail report also claimed that Arsenal and Roma are interested.

However, given that it was Brendan Rodgers who signed him from PSG for Celtic – Edouard is keen to make a reunion with the ex-Liverpool and Swansea boss. Leeds will have to do some convincing and move quickly to change his mind.
