Leeds United’s transfer gamble with Kemar Roofe is looking justified

n the summer Leeds United decided to take a risk and sell striker Kemar Roofe. It was a calculated decision based on his contract at Elland Road coming toward its expiration and with Leeds looking to stay within their FFP means.

The forward ended up joining Anderlecht in a deal reported by The Sun to be worth around £7 million.

Leeds fans were left disappointed, considering Roofe’s excellent form last season. However, another reason why Leeds were likely to move him on was his niggling injury trouble.

Roofe often spent periods of time out of action with injury trouble and it would leave Leeds without striking options.

Based on his season with Anderlecht so far, it looks like a justified transfer gamble.

Roofe has been in good form in Belgium. He has scored seven goals in 16 games for his new club.

However, that total of just 16 games is alarmingly low.

Roofe missed the start of the season with an ankle injury and has not played a single game in 2020 because of a calf problem.

It means his impact at his new club has been minimal. Whilst plenty of Leeds United fans will wish he was around to support and challenge Patrick Bamford, his inconsistent injury record suggests he would once again have been letting Leeds down more often than not.

Instead, Leeds have put in a fantastic promotion battle without Roofe and the money made has undoubtedly helped them keep the books balanced. It looks like a transfer gamble that has paid off.
